Throughout September i’ve been busy working on our biggest mural project yet. We were commissioned by Manchester Life to produce three large wall murals at their new development in the Ancoats area of Manchester.
Ancoats is currently undergoing a huge regeneration and becoming one of the most sort-after areas to live around Manchester city centre. Manchester Life are spear-heading much of the development in the area and Smith’s Yard is their newest residential project in the area.
When I met with the client to discuss the brief they explained to me that they want Ancoats to become a community, not home to a transient population but a place where people stay and put down roots. They wanted the artwork to portray this and also they wanted the wall murals to feel local.
Round Are Way It’s Alright
This piece was inspired by an Oasis track, “Round Are Way“. The song talks about community, childhood and the familiarity of an area someone calls home. The lyrics, although grammatically incorrect, are written how Mancunians speak this adds to the local feel of the piece. The style of the mural is inspired by a skyline featuring buildings of all shapes, sizes and colours.
This mural was approximated 150m2 and took 8 days to complete…it’s the biggest mural i’ve completed so far.
Your Part of the Story Round Here
This mural is 40m long and reads “You’re Part of the Story Round Here”. I wanted the piece to speak directly to the residents, making reference to the rich history of Ancoats while embracing the new era in the story of the area. Each word comes from different direction and congregates together to create the piece, highlighting the different communities that have called Ancoats “home” over the years.
This mural was the smallest of the three and depicts the name of the residential development. I really like the contemporary type and the leading lines in this piece.
