Joy Division formed in Salford, in 1976, where they became one of the pioneers of the post-punk music movement. Joy Division were signed to the famous Factory Records in Manchester and released their acclaimed debut album, Unknown Pleasures in 1979. Tragically lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980. The remaining members went on to form New Order.
