We love Liverpool and so it has become a focus for us in many of our designs. Liverpool art is particularly popular with the close knit communities and the love of the city. Liverpool is one of the most iconic cities in the UK but what makes Liverpool so awe-inspiring? Let us enlighten you…
So you’ve heard of Stonehenge? Well, Liverpool is home to The Calder stones which are even older. They were erected around 5,000 years ago in the New Stone Age or Neolithic period. They are believed to be part of a burial mound in Liverpool. Well worth visiting the mystical stones when you visit the city.
Liverpool Community
Liverpool has a great sense of community, home to the longest-established Chinese community in the UK. It also is the location of the largest Chinese arch in all of Europe! A gift from Shanghai, the Imperial Arch stands 13.5 meters and 44 feet tall. It spans Nelson street and is a must-see in the city with over 200 dragons across five roofs.
Liverpool Music
The city is known for its musical history, the Guinness Book of Records holds Liverpool as the capital of pop. More Liverpudlians have hit number 1 than any other town or city in the UK. Most famously are The Beatles. Who had 20 number 1 hits, still holding the most amount of number 1’s by any artist! But other famous artists from the city include Elvis Costello, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Dead or Alive, Echo and the Bunnymen, The La’s and Cast … Who’s your favourite?
Music is one of our passions and our Liverpool art includes lots of music. Check out our Liverpool Art City print here…
Liverpool Horse Racing
One of the biggest dates in Liverpool has to be the Grand National, a three-day horse race held at Aintree racecourse. With over 150,000 attendees it was first held in 1839. The races span across a whole weekend in April, with around 13 million placing a bet. There is a grand prize fund of £1 million it’s one of the most valuable jump races in the whole of Europe.
Liverpool History and Culture
Liverpool is a city full of history and culture, with over 2,500 listed buildings and 250 public monuments. This makes it the home to the largest collection of Grade 1 listed buildings, with more national museums and galleries in the UK outside of London! Liverpool also played an important role in the growth of the British Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries and has over 6 areas within the docklands and centre that have been listed as Unesco World Heritage sites. It was a pioneering city in the development of dock technology and transport and this can still be seen today.
Liverpool Football
How could we talk about Liverpool and not mention football? Liverpool FC is currently the most successful football club in England, winning 37 league championships, 6 European cups, 3 UEFA cups, 1 Cup Winner cup, 12 FA cups, 8 League cups and a FIFA world cup… Phew!
