Back in June I produced a wall mural down at Hatch on Oxford Road in Manchester. The mural “It All Comes From The Heart” has been really popular so they have invited me back last week to produce another artwork for them. This time the brief had a bit of twist, it wasn’t a wall they wanted me to paint on…but an actual piano!
Fresh off the back of winning “Pop-up, event or project of the year” at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival Awards 2018 Hatch are in the process of expanding and are going to be welcoming around 30 new pop-up’s to their venue. As part of the expansion they are going to be setting up the piano to hold live juke-box events where you can turn up and request songs to be played.
The brief for the artwork was quite open, the only stipulation being that they wanted a white line design on black background to ensure that the piece complemented my other mural and the branding at Hatch. As the artwork was going to be painted onto a piano I wanted the quote to be about music. I love the quote “Let the music take your soul” and I have used it previously on a ceiling mural I produced at Bar 21 in Manchester. I think the quote describes the effect that music can have on you amazingly well, it can be all encompassing.
This was the first time i’ve produced artwork on a 3D surface and while it was challenging it was definitely fun and something that i’m going to explore further in the future. I love how you have to actually explore the piano to find out what the mural says, you have to really engage with it. I can’t wait to see it in place in Hatch and request a few songs to be played.
Check out the time-lapse video of the production of the mural below and contact me if you’d like to commission your own original artwork.
