In June I was commissioned to produce a Frightened Rabbit song lyric piece for a huge fan of the band. Frightened Rabbit are a Scottish Indie band that formed in 2003. The band released their first album, Sing The Greys, in 2007. The lyric in this piece comes from Heads Roll Off, a track on their critically acclaimed 2008 album, The Midnight Organ Fight.
Unfortunately it was due to a very tragic situation that drove the fan to commission the piece of work. Earlier this year the lead singer and guitarist from Frightened Rabbit, Scott Hutchinson, sadly took his own life. Throughout his life Scott had fought an on-going battle with mental health and depression. His lyrics often painted an intense picture of heartbreak, loneness and suicidal thoughts. Simon, who commissioned this artwork, wanted to commemorate Scott and his unbelievable talent with this artwork.
I wanted the Frightened Rabbit print to be simple to let the song lyrics convey their message. However I choose to use an almost organic pattern to give the impression that there is movement and change within the message.
Following the completion of the original commissioned artwork I spoke to Simon and we decided to release prints and donate 25% of the proceeds to the charity CALM; Campaign Against Living Miserably.
The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is an award-winning charity dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. I was shocked to read that in 2015, 75% of all UK suicides were male.
Hopefully the money that we raise will go towards helping others who find themselves in a similar position to Scott.
You can purchase an A4 or A3 print of this Frightened Rabbit artwork and support CALM now.
